Eve

How Eve handles your data

I last updated this page on .

Reads

During setup, Eve reads your likes, subscriptions and history once. After that, it only reads the videos YouTube suggests to you.

Sends

Video titles, channel names and lengths, plus the topic buttons above your home page, go through Eve’s server to the paid version of Google’s Gemini AI, along with your Show and Hide lists.

Keeps

Eve keeps your Show and Hide lists and the changes you make to them, the titles and channels of the videos it kept and hid, which topic buttons it kept and hid, and the email address and name of the Google account you register with. I read the lists and videos to fix Eve’s mistakes. I use your email and name to know who uses Eve and to reach you about Eve.

Who runs Eve

I’m Simon Bruno, and I’m responsible for Eve and your data. Write to me at simonadrbruno@gmail.com.

What Eve reads

Eve reads your liked videos, your subscriptions and up to 200 of the videos you last watched on youtube.com when you set it up, and only then. If Eve finds too little, it asks you to write a few lines yourself.

After that, every time you open YouTube, Eve reads the videos on your home page and in the suggestions next to the video you’re watching.

Eve reads these pages inside Chrome, the same way your browser opens them, through the YouTube account you’re signed in to. Eve never sees your password, and your sign-in details never leave Chrome.

When you add Eve, Chrome warns that it can “read and change your data on www.youtube.com”. Chrome shows that warning for every extension that changes how a site looks. Eve only hides videos in your own browser, doesn’t change anything in your YouTube account and doesn’t run on any other site.

Registering with Google

To register, you click Continue with Google. Chrome opens its own sign-in window, where you sign in to Google yourself. Google tells Eve your email address and name, and nothing else. Eve never gets your password, your Gmail, your Google Drive or your YouTube account through it.

Eve reads your YouTube likes, subscriptions and history from the YouTube pages, as described above, not from Google’s sign-in.

What Eve sends

At setup, Eve sends the titles and channel names of your liked videos, subscriptions and watched videos.

Every time you open YouTube, it sends the title, channel name and length of each video on the page and the names of the topic buttons above your home page, together with your Show and Hide lists and the changes you’ve made to them.

Eve also sends the short code YouTube gives each video, so it doesn’t check the same video twice.

Eve sends nothing else from the page, no web addresses and nothing from other websites.

Where it goes

Everything Eve sends goes to its own server, which runs on Amazon Web Services in Frankfurt, Germany. The server passes it to Google’s Gemini AI. At setup, Gemini drafts your Show and Hide lists. After that, Gemini says whether each video matches your lists.

What Google does with it

Google only receives the video details and your lists from Eve’s server, so it never gets your name, your YouTube account or your internet address. Eve uses the paid version of Gemini, which I pay for. Under Google’s terms for that version, Google doesn’t use this data to train its AI and keeps it for a limited time, only to check for misuse. Google may process it outside the European Union.

What Eve keeps

Eve keeps your Show and Hide lists and every change you make to them. Eve also keeps the titles and channels of the videos it kept and hid on your home page and next to the videos you watch, and which topic buttons above your home page it kept and hid. They’re kept together under the Google account you register with.

Eve also keeps the email address and name of the Google account you registered with. I use them to know who uses Eve and to reach you about Eve. Eve never sells them and never uses them for ads. If you delete everything, Eve deletes your email address and name too.

Eve also keeps a few counts, with no titles in them: how many videos it checked for you each day, and when you set Eve up, paused it or turned it back on.

Eve never keeps your likes, subscriptions or watch history. Eve reads them once at setup to draft your Show and Hide lists, then lets go of them.

Who can see it

I read what Eve keeps, so I can fix its mistakes and make Eve better. The email address and name of your Google account are attached to it. Eve doesn’t store your YouTube account. Eve never sells any of it or uses it for ads.

Server logs

Eve’s server sees your internet address (IP address) when Eve talks to it, as every website does. The server doesn’t write that address down anywhere.

The server’s own logs contain no addresses, emails, names or titles, and Eve deletes them after 7 days.

Why Eve may use it

Eve’s terms are this page. You agree to them on the setup screen, where you tick a box. Under European privacy law (the GDPR), that agreement is what allows Eve to use your data. You can take it back at any time by deleting everything.

If you remove Eve

Eve stops straight away, and no page opens. What Eve kept stays on its server for up to 90 days, unless you delete it first.

While Eve is on, it keeps one small setting in your browser’s storage for youtube.com, so it can start before YouTube’s page does. Eve removes it when you pause Eve or delete everything. If you remove Eve while it’s on, the setting stays in your browser until you clear youtube.com’s site data. Nothing in that setting is about you.

How long Eve keeps it

Eve keeps your data while you use it. Once Eve hasn’t checked a video for you in 90 days, Eve deletes your data.

If I stop running Eve, I delete everything within 30 days.

How to delete it

Click Eve’s ring in Chrome’s toolbar and choose Delete everything under Details. Eve deletes it from its server straight away. Eve’s nightly backups still keep a copy for a short while, and those copies are gone within 14 days. The server’s logs, which contain no titles, are deleted after 7 days.

Do this before you remove Eve from Chrome, because the ring goes with it.

Afterwards, Eve keeps only the date you deleted everything, plus a few counts with nothing linked to you.

Writing to me works too.

Eve can’t delete what Google keeps to check for misuse, but that isn’t linked to you.

Your rights

You can ask to see, get a copy of, correct or delete your data at any time. Write to me. I’ll answer as soon as I can, and within a month at the latest.

Age

You must be 18 or older to use Eve, because Google’s terms for its Gemini AI require it.

Chrome Web Store

Eve follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use rules. That means Eve uses what it reads from YouTube only to run and improve Eve, never for ads, and never sells it.
